According to a recent story, Google staff members are criticizing management, most notably CEO Sundar Pichai, for the way the firm handled this week’s debut of Bard, a rival to ChatGPT.
According to CNBC, these workers posted their opinions on the Bard news on the well-liked internal forum Memegen. It is being described as “rushed,” “botched,” and “un-Googley” by several employees.
“Dear Sundar, the Bard launch and layoffs were hurried, bungled, and shortsighted,” one meme said, beside a solemn photo of Pichai. “Please return to a long-term perspective.” Employees overwhelmingly supported the post.
Another highly ranked joke said, “Sundar and leadership deserve a Perf NI,” referencing the lowest level in the company’s staff performance rating system. “Their pursuit of sharpening focus’ is laughably short-sighted and un-Googlely.”
The US-based software giant introduced “Bard” earlier this month to compete with ChatGPT in the large language models (LLMs) area. CEO Pichai made the statement on his blog. Bard is an “experimental conversational AI service powered by LaMDA” — Language Model for Dialogue Applications — that, unlike other services, “draws on material from the web to offer new, high-quality replies” rather than having its training data limited to a certain year.
Meanwhile, Reuters claimed that the worldwide hype surrounding Microsoft’s chatbot ChatGPT has migrated to China, bolstering stocks of AI-related firms and encouraging a rush of Chinese startups to reveal competing initiatives.
Chinese IT giants such as Baidu and Alibaba, as well as smaller start-ups, have been working on AI projects for years, similar to Microsoft and Google.
Chatbots in China are largely used for social interactions, but ChatGPT, which learns from massive quantities of data how to respond to user inputs in a human-like manner, excels at more professional activities like programming and essay writing.
