Following the declaration by India’s IT giant Tata Consultancy Services to mandate employees to be present at the office for five days a week, Infosys has purportedly directed certain employees to work from the office for a minimum of 10 days every month. This presents a challenge to proponents of remote work, which had gained widespread acceptance in the corporate sphere during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“During an earnings conference call on October 12, Infosys CEO Salil Parekh affirmed our commitment to maintaining flexibility for our employees. Nevertheless, we’ve observed a consistent increase in the number of employees returning to the campus every quarter and every week, and we anticipate this trend to persist.”
This declaration arises amidst a contentious discussion on work-life equilibrium after Infosys founder Narayana Murthy advocated a 70-hour workweek for young professionals. In an interview, Murthy contended that Indian youths should devote over 70 hours a week to bolster the country’s growth and productivity, considering its comparative lag behind Western nations.
Furthermore, major tech companies such as Amazon.com Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google have also promoted the idea of employees working from the office for at least a few days each week.
The choice between remote work and office attendance is highly favored by employees worldwide as it saves both money and time typically spent on daily commuting between home and the office.
